POSITIVELY GOOD READS

The Wife (2003)

by Meg Wolitzer

The Wife is a feminist tale in which a man's success comes at the expense of a woman's potential and recognition. Joan Cattleman, 64, is accompanying her husband, Joe, to Finland, where he will accept the Helsinki Prize for a lifetime contribution to literature. Her thoughts flash back over their four decades together. Once a gifted student in Joe’s creative writing class, as a wife Joan subjugated her talent to his career, raised their children, and overlooked his infidelities. Not until the shocking conclusion is the extent of her sacrifice made clear.
